IOM/Probes

This stimulating probe is the most accurate of the three disposable probes. It is accurate to about 0.5mm when stimulating through a layer of tissue. In order to stimulate through any tissue covering the nerve, the current must be increased. The probe is designed so that the shaft may have a single bend of up to 30 degrees put in it by the surgeon if using a microscope.

Disposable Concentric Probe

This stimulating probe is intended for stimulating across the bulk of a tumour to determine whether a nerve is lying behind a structure, and is not designed for accurate and selective nerve stimulation. However, accuracy can be improved by inserting the ground electrode as close as possible to the surgical area, and by using the minimum current that will stimulate the nerve.

Disposable Monopolar Probe

This stimulating probe will stimulate through a small amount of tissue and yet remain accurate. Current is passed between the two probe tips, so the current is localised but will also flow through adjacent tissue. The further apart the two probe tips, the greater the current penetration and the less accurate the probe becomes.
